Willunga Race Report

Good old Willunga, the weather was changing more than a Yo-Yo goes up and down. I for one, was waiting in the transport line, debating whether to remove my jumper or not because the sun was that hot. However, by the time I had got to the top for my run it was bucketing down! It didn't matter though, the conditions kept everyone on their toes.

Saturday practice....
...left most people thinking they would be racing in the rain, as I said before that would be fine because it was so fun to drift the turns at the top of the track. I saw more people drifting their bikes this weekend then I can remember in a while, probably since the last wet Willunga race. The track itself didn't have any major changes and was similar to the one used last race. Track builder Brad and all those that helped him, spent time tidying up a few areas, digging some of the berms in meant they were still there on Sunday afternoon allowing you to commit 100%. The wrap up from Saturday practice was this; the track was holding up well, most peoples lines were sorted and the weather was the issue on most peoples minds, mud tyres or not?

Sunday morning and reports were that there was not a drop of rain on the track Saturday night but sure enough, as soon as shuttles started, down came the H2O. Everyone that put those mud tyres on must have been cheering. After practice when racing started conditions were still dicey with intermittent showers. Any spectators would have told you it made for great watching as people were slip sliding everywhere. Spectating the left hander before the rocky jump right near the bottom of the track was a hoot, people came barreling in, got a bit loose, kept going, some held it and some went down in a pile! However, as the day went on, the rain stopped and conditions got better. Under 19's and Elite saw some surprising seeding results, some riders crashed and others just cruised down conservatively making sure they were okay for the final. I won't harp on about the results, read them in the results section but there were some truly fast times being set across the board. Overall a good weekend of riding, that despite the wild weather, gives you a warm feeling on the inside!

Note; talking about a warm feeling, thank you to the property owners and all the volunteers that helped out. Without them the race couldn't happen. I also wonder the merits of having a list of all club members and making it compulsory for one race weekend they help set up, bunt the track, etc. to help ensure the load is spread across the club?
